The Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert

Planning a trip to Foum Zguid? Learn about the seasons, temperatures, and what to pack for your desert adventure.

Timing is everything in the desert. The Sahara is a land of extremes, and choosing the right month can make the difference between a pleasant adventure and a scorching challenge.

October to April: The Golden Season

The best time to visit Erg Chegaga is from October to April. During these months, daytime temperatures are pleasant (20°C to 25°C), making it perfect for hiking and camel trekking.

  • October & November: Warm days, cool nights. Perfect for swimming in oasis pools.
  • December & January: Can get very cold at night (down to 0°C), so pack thermal layers! Crystal clear skies.
  • February to April: Spring brings life to the desert. The weather warms up, and if we're lucky, wildflowers bloom in the wadis.

May to September: The Heat

Summer in the Sahara is intense, with temperatures often exceeding 45°C (113°F). We typically recommend avoiding long treks during this time, although some travelers enjoy the extreme solitude and heat (with proper hydration and early morning starts).
